New year in Venice

The new year in Venice begin with having a swim at the beach of Lido. Not many people use to do this because of winter, but it is a funny way to begin new year also for those who watch people swimming.

Regatta of Befane - January 6

The race takes place along the Grand Canal and the participants are men aged 50 years and over. 

Carnival - 10 days before Tuesday Gras    

The carnival takes place 10 days before the start of Lent.    
There are many opportunities for fun around the city parades, performances of commedia of art, concerts and masked balls.    

Concert Ash - Midnight, Tuesday Gras    

It is a traditional concert, which begins the Lent and is held in the church of the Pieta, the Church of Vivaldi.

Up and down over  bridges - Second Sunday of March    

The Up and down over bridges is a marathon through the streets of the city, where participants run up and down the bridges of Venice.

Blessing of the fire - The washing of feet on Holy Thursday    

The ceremony takes place in the Basilica of San Marco.    
Immediately after sunset, the sacred candle in the atrium of the basilica is switched on and starts the procession which takes place with the rite of washing of feet.    

Feast of San Marco - 25 April    

It is the feast of the patron saint of Venice, San Marco, which is celebrated with a procession into the basilica.
On April 25 is the feast of "Bocolo" where Venetians give to their love of a budding rose.    

The Sensa. Marriage of the Sea - Ascension Sunday    

The Sensa renews each year the marriage of Venice with the Adriatic, the sea.    
The mayor, with the authorities, from the Piazza San Marco travels by boat to the mouth of the port of St. Nicolò where the ritual throwing takes and the laurel wreath in memory of the fallen into the sea.
The route is made at the oars. To accompany the authorities, a procession with costumed oarsmen and several sports boats, belonging to companies remiere.

After the rite, is celebrated a solemn religious ceremony at the Church of San Nicolò of Lido.
At the end of the festivities, the race on gondolas.    

Vogalonga   

It is a non-competitive race that takes place along a route of 32 km starting from the Bacino di San Marco, step to the island of Burano and back.    
The regatta is open to all lovers of the oar, and now more than 1,500 boats from around the world.

Palio of the ancient Maritime Republics - May or June, every 4 years    

An annual competition played between the four Maritime Republics, each of which take turns hosting the event.    
A magnificent parade opens the celebrations in which every Marine Republic recalls a moment in history.
The event concludes with a race between boats and delivery of the trophy to the winner that keeps for a year, and then returning it to the win the following year.    

Sagra di San Pietro of Castello - Last week of June    

A party in one of the last fields of grass in the city. During the festival, evening concerts are held, guided tours of the church and a mini gondola ride around insula St. Peter.    

Biennale - From June to October    

The Biennale is one of the most important cultural institutions in the world.    
Active in promoting new artistic trends, organizes international events in multidisciplinary areas: art, architecture, cinema, dance, music, theater.    
The Biennale of Art takes place every two years and the majority of events stretching from the Public and Gardini Corderie of the Arsenale.   

Feast of the Redeemer - Third Sunday of July    

It is a religious festival that takes place at the Church of the Redeemer on the Giudecca to commemorate the end of the plague of 1577.    
Pilgrims and visitors have access to the church across the bridge of boats which is set along the basin of the Giudecca. The festivities are closed with the traditional race of the Redeemer.    

On Saturday before the Feast of the Redeemer, the basin of San Marco is full of boats, decorated with colorful decorations, waiting for the spectacle of the traditional fireworks.    

Regatta Pellestrina - First Sunday of August    

It is held on the occasion of the feast of Our Lady of the Apparition.    

Venice Film Festival - last week of August, first week of September    

Second in importance only to the Cannes Film Festival, the Venice Film Festival takes place between the last week of August and the first week of September.    
The Lido of Venezia is populated by movie stars from around the world and the city comes alive for holidays, special events and many projections.    

Regata Storica - first Sunday of September    

The Historical Regatta is a great feast of historic boats and rowers in period costumes that recall the celebrations for the arrival in Venice in the Queen of Cyprus, Caterina Cornaro, which marked the beginning of the Venetian domination of the Mediterranean.    
The regatta concludes with the races of pupparini of mash, the caorline of Gondolini and gondolas, and represents an important moment of the Venetian rowing season.    

Burano Regatta - Third Sunday of September    

It is the race that concludes the rowing season, and is also known as the "revenge of the Historical."
The race takes place in front of Burano where the opportunity for banquets are prepared with polenta, fish and wine.    

Festival of less Sant'Erasmo - First Sunday of October    

It takes place on Sant'Erasmo and culminates in the afternoon with a race with mixed teams.    

Venice Marathon - Second Sunday of October    

The marathon is run along the Riviera del Brenta to Stra, departure and arrival in the historic center of Venice, in Riva of Sette Martiri.    

Feast of the Dead - November 2    

During the feast of the dead is a tradition to give the beans, colorful sweet made with almond paste, shaped like a large bean.    

Festa di San Martino - 11 November    

The Venetian children run through the streets singing the song of San Martino and beating pots and cups and everything that can attract attention. The tradition that adults respond to children by giving them some Soldino.    
In San Martin we eat the traditional cake, shaped like a knight, made of short pastry and decorated with colored chocolates.    

Festa della Salute - 21 November    

Every year November 21 is celebrated the great feast of the Madonna of Salute, at the church built as a votive by the Venetians after the plague in 1630.    
A votive bridge is built on the Grand Canal to allow the pilgrims to reach the island on foot of Health.
It is traditional to bring a candle in church and ask for a pardon for his own health.    
Many stalls stationed on the pavement of the church by selling colored sweet, crisp, cotton candy and lots of games for kids.    

Christmas Market, Campo Santo Stefano - December    

Each year in Campo Santo Stefano near the Accademia bridge, does the Christmas market with many stalls of products from all over Italy.
